How to choose a temperature sensor or temperature probe?
There are many questions about how to choose a temperature sensor probe. In fact, the material and shape of the temperature sensor you choose actually depends on the environment in which your sensor operates. Three of the more commonly used temperature sensor probe materials and their advantages in different environments are outlined here.
The temperature sensor probe is a circuit composed of temperature sensor temperature sensing elements (NTC, pt100, pt1000, K even, etc.) encapsulated in the housing, and extends to the receiver circuit through wires. The probe housing protects the temperature sensor element from external factors such as moisture, corrosive materials, vibration and mechanical wear.
To select a probe, first consider your end equipment and its operating environment. You can then select the temperature sensor probe housing from one of several materials:
Plastic: Plastic probes are mainly used where cost is an important factor. The plastic housing obviously cannot handle the high temperature range, which makes this type of probe beneficial for cold sensing applications such as refrigerators or cooling stations.
Copper: The advantage of using a copper probe is its high thermal conductivity metal housing, which produces a fast thermal response for applications with rapid temperature changes, such as radiator tubes. The downside to using copper probes is its cost and susceptibility to moisture and oxidation (producing green matter) when exposed to air for extended periods of time.
Stainless Steel: Stainless steel probes have the same thermal conductivity but no corrosion or contamination issues. Probes of this type are often used in food preparation or medical applications where contamination of the probe material can be a problem.
Regardless of the probe material, each probe has a temperature sensor inside it. The sensor features linear temperature accuracy over a wide temperature range for a variety of applications. The sensor package should be small and thin enough to improve the thermal response speed of the temperature sensor.
